What Is PDI? New Car Pre-Delivery Inspection Explained

A Pre-Delivery Inspection protects your brand-new car from transit damage, wrong variants and stale stock. Learn what to check at delivery and why an independent PDI matters.

PDI stands for Pre-Delivery Inspection: the detailed check of a brand-new car before you accept delivery and drive it out of the showroom. Most buyers assume a new car is flawless. It usually is close, but not always, and the moment you sign the delivery acknowledgement, most problems become your problem. A proper PDI is your last chance to catch issues while the dealer still has every reason to fix them.

We run PDIs across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh every week, and the pattern is consistent: the cars that are checked carefully get problems resolved before delivery, and the buyers who skip PDI often discover them weeks later when it is far harder to prove.

Why a new car even needs inspecting

A new car passes through a long chain before it reaches you: factory, stockyard, transport truck or train, and finally the dealership. Things go wrong at every link.

Transit and yard damage

Cars are loaded and unloaded from carriers multiple times. Minor scrapes, trolley dents, scratched alloys and paint chips happen in the yard. Dealers often touch these up quietly. A touched-up panel on a car with zero km is not what you paid for, and you have every right to reject it or demand a panel repaint on record.

Stale stock and old manufacturing dates

A car that sat unsold in a yard for a year is still sold as new, but its 12-volt battery may be weak, the tyres will have aged, and rubber seals can dry out. The manufacturing date is stamped on a plate in the engine bay or door jamb. If it is July 2026 and the car was built in mid-2025, you are buying old stock and should negotiate hard or ask for a newer unit.

Wrong variant or colour

It sounds unlikely, but variant mix-ups are real. You booked the top trim with a sunroof, six airbags and alloys, and the car delivered has fabric seats and steel wheels with covers. Feature lists are long and easy to get wrong on a busy delivery day. A PDI confirms every feature you paid for is physically present.

What to check at delivery

Odometer and readiness

  • Odometer should read very low, typically under 30 to 50 km from factory testing and yard movement. A reading of a few hundred km needs a clear explanation.
  • Fuel should be enough to reach a pump; note the level.
  • Ask for the exact date the car was received at the dealership.

Manufacturing date and VIN

  • Locate the manufacturing month and year plate and confirm the car is recent stock.
  • Match the VIN and chassis number on the plate, the windscreen, and every document, including the invoice, insurance and Form 22.
  • Confirm the engine number matches the paperwork.

Exterior and paint

  • Inspect every panel in daylight for scratches, swirl marks, chips and dents.
  • Check paint thickness consistency; an unusually thick reading on one panel suggests a yard respray.
  • Look at panel gaps, alloy wheels for curb marks, and the windscreen and all glass for chips or cracks.
  • Confirm the protective transit film or tape has not left adhesive damage.

Under the bonnet and underneath

  • Coolant, brake fluid and washer fluid at correct levels with no leaks.
  • Battery clamped, terminals clean, and ideally load-tested if the car is older stock.
  • No oil or coolant drips under the car after it has been parked.
  • Belts and hoses intact and undamaged.

Interior and features

  • Confirm the exact variant: seat material, airbag count, touchscreen size, sunroof, alloys, connected features and every item on your booking sheet.
  • Test all power windows, central locking, AC cooling on full, infotainment, reverse camera and sensors.
  • Check seat covers, floor mats and all warning lights illuminate then clear on ignition.
  • Ensure the cabin has no stains, no scuff marks and the plastic wrap is still on high-touch areas.

Electronics scan

Even a new car can leave the factory or sit in a yard long enough to log electronic faults. Plugging in a scan tool confirms there are no stored trouble codes in the engine, transmission or body modules before you take delivery.

The kit and paperwork

  1. 1Owner manual, service booklet and warranty card, all correctly stamped.
  2. 2Spare wheel, jack, tool kit and, where applicable, the first-aid kit and warning triangle.
  3. 3Two keys and, for keyless cars, the mechanical emergency key.
  4. 4Invoice, Form 22, temporary registration, and insurance with your correct name and address.
  5. 5Any accessories you paid for, itemised and physically present.

Why an independent PDI beats trusting the dealer

Dealers do their own pre-delivery checks, and most are honest. But there is a conflict of interest: the dealer wants the car handed over today, and anything found is a cost and a delay for them. An independent inspector works only for you. We have no incentive to overlook a touched-up bumper or a battery that will not hold charge.

Once you sign the delivery note and drive out, a scratch becomes your fault. Before you sign, it is the dealer’s problem to fix.

An independent PDI also gives you leverage. When a trained engineer documents a paint defect or an old manufacturing date with photos, the dealer takes it seriously and resolves it on record, rather than with a quiet dab of touch-up paint in the yard.

When to book your PDI

The best time is after the dealer confirms the car is ready but before the final payment and delivery formalities. That way any issue can still be corrected, a panel repainted on record, or a newer unit allocated, without you being locked in. For high-value and premium cars, this small step is even more worthwhile.
